Hi, my name is Samantha Bouphanouvong. I am a transfer student from Pierce College, and I am entering my final year at San Diego State University as a Civil Engineering Major with a Minor in Sustainability. I initially started off my schooling as an Architect major because I have always had an admiration for unique structures. I took 2 years of architecture classes, which included many drafting courses and cognitive design courses. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my architecture courses, I felt like I was not adequately challenging myself or living to my full potential. So, I reevaluated my perspective and assessed all the aspects of architecture that I had a passion for, and I found what I was lacking. After speaking with counselors and industry professionals, I found the correct path to Civil Engineering. After taking my first class, I knew I had made the right decision. I joined ASCE my second semester of college and the only regret I have is that I wish I had joined sooner! ASCE has paved the way to my success, not only at my internship, but it has helped me with my social skills and making new friends. Now, I currently serve as Outreach chair for ASCE. As Outreach Chair, I oversee scheduling regular outreach exhibitions in the community and educating my peers on the community responsibility we have as civil engineers. Joining ASCE has been one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I hope that everyone who joins has the same gratifications I have had through this society.
